TO MOTHER

A quiet evening in the home,
Under the cherry tree her door.
Oh, how I long to see her face
And feel her warm embrace.

There by the window all alone
Lit by the golden setting sun.
Before her, peace, eternal friend
Behind her, ploughed up land.

Cold winds, lamenting, circle.
Day is dawning
Over the dew touched fields.
These words go off to her:

My dear Mother, dearest Mother
No one’s worth more than you.

Tonight she cannot close her eyes.
The worries will not leave her mind.
She doesn’t often get his news-
A simple word or two.

I’m doing fine, God bless you now’.
Her tears unspoken questions, flow.
They ask when life’s to him unkind
Whose love her son will find.

Cold winds, lamenting, circle.
Day is dawning
Over the dew touched fields.
These words go off to her:

My dear Mother, dearest Mother
No one’s worth more than you.
